Big Snow Cruiser Will Pass Through County On Monday

The huge snow cruiser which will be taken on the next Byrd Antarctic expedition will be piloted on U. S. Road 6 through LaPorte county on Monday, the state highway department announced today.

The cruiser on wheels 10 feet high is 19 feet, eight inches wide, and will occupy the entire width of the highway. It is being taken from Chicago where it was built to Boston, Mass., where it will be loaded on the expedition's vessel.

The snow cruiser is expected to average 24 miles an hour. It will reach the Illinois-Indiana line at 8 tomorrow morning, the district highway office here has been informed. It is planned to make some tests in the sand near U. S. Road 6 in Lake county, but the cruiser will proceed westward without much delay, it is said. It may reach this county in the early afternoon.

It will be driven along U. S. Road 6 as far as the intersection with U. S. Road 31. Then it will go south on U. S. Road 30 and thence eastward to Fort Wayne where Monday night will be spent.

State police and highway department workers will do the task of blocking off U. S. Road 6 between intersections as the cruiser moves along. At intersections and possibly at other points the huge vehicle will be driven to one side to permit traffic to pass.
