| Delay Trip Of Snow Cruiser |
|
The near-Michigan City trip of Commander Richard E. Byrd's mammoth snow cruiser was called off suddenly this morning. The cruiser was scheduled to start its overland journey to Boston by way of U. S. 6 which passes Westville. Late last night, however, state police who are to block off the route received word that the trip had been delayed indefinitely. No reason was advanced. State highway department officials said they understood the trip will be made Tuesday or Wednesday. Confirmation at the Pullman-Standard Car Mfg. Co. plant in Pullman, Ill., could not be obtained. Dozens of persons called the News-Dispatch this morning seeking information about the cruiser. Apparently a large number were planning to drive 12 miles to Westville for a glimpse of the gigantic Antarctic monster. Alexander Schreiber of the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, whose research engineers designed the craft, said last- minute construction delays had forced indefinite postponement of its cross-country trip. In the event the cruiser does leave Chicago tomorrow morning it will probably pass through Westville between 9 a. m. and early afternoon, since it must reach Fort Wayne by dark for an overnight stop. |
