Region May See Byrd Snow Cruiser Wednesday--Maybe
Builders Plan to Start on Trip Tomorrow, but Might Delay It Once More

The Calumet region is expected to get its first glimpse of Admiral Byrd's snow cruiser tomorrow when the mammoth machine is wheeled through this area en route to the Dunes State park for a brief testing period.

The cruiser, now in process of completion at the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing company plant at 110th street and Cottage Grove avenue, Chicago, is expected to pass through Calumet City, Hammond, Munster and Griffith prior to arriving at the outskirts of Gary tomorrow morning at 6 o'clock.

Production delays may cause a postponement of the starting time and enable local residents a few additional hours of sleep before the cruiser arrives in Hammond.

Officials of the research foundation of the Armour Institute in Chicago have decided to use U. S. Route 6 as the best highway for transporting the machine to the testing ground. The craft is nearly 20 feet wide and it will prove impossible to take the cruiser to the state park without disrupting traffic along the route.

Only inclement weather is expected to prevent a large assemblage of residents along the route. Following yesterday's delays, hundreds of calls were received at The Hammond Times switchboard asking for the new starting time.

Dr. Thomas C. Poulter, senior scientist on the Byrd expedition and designer of the craft, received plaudits of scientists and engineers who attended a special preview of the cruiser in the Pullman-Standard plant Friday.
